Graduation for the Class of February 2012

On Wednesday 22 February 2012, Taylors UniLink acknowledged its first graduates.

Wei-Hao CHEN (Jack), from Taiwan, was one of our high achievers. Jack says the Taylors UniLink provided him with valuable preparation for university entry. Jack was very appreciative of the small classes and the individual attention that his lecturers were able to provide.

When Jack came to Australia to study, he was not familiar with the Australian Higher Education system. His year of university preparation at Taylors UniLink has allowed him to make an informed choice about the course he wanted to study and the tertiary institution which suited his needs and aspirations.

According to Jack the extra attention given to him during his year at Taylors UniLink, along with additional subjects designed especially to prepare him for university studies, has prepared him well for his chosen university course.

Jack has been successful in gaining admission into the second year of the Swinburne University Bachelor of Business (Management). He has also had offers from Deakin University and RMIT.

Taylors UniLink Information Evening

Taylors UniLink information evening runs from 5pm Thursday, October 6, at Taylors College, in the heart of Melbourne's CBD.

The evening will consist of a campus tour, FAQs with academic advisors and admissions coordinators giving you the opportunity to find out first-hand how Taylors UniLink can help you with your first steps towards a rewarding career in Business or IT.

Taylors UniLink has credit arrangements with 14 universities in Australia, which means students know up front how many credits they will receive when they move into a second-year degree course.

Taylors UniLink offers flexibility with start dates so that students can opt to begin their diploma course in February, June or October 2012.

Preparing for the future is exciting – but it can also be an anxious time for students and their families. If you have just missed out on a university place or are simply not sure exactly what career you want, Taylors UniLink - a new concept in university preparation that offers government-accredited higher education diplomas in Business and IT - could be the answer.

Choose the university that you want to attend

While many other available diploma courses force students to choose a university and then enrol in a course that will lead them into that university Taylors UniLink takes a different approach by allowing students to decide at the end of the diploma which university will best meet their aspirations. And for those who do know what they want to do before starting a conditional letter of offer from their chosen university.

Taylors UniLink Campus Director, Tony Cranshaw, says that Taylors UniLink, which took its first students in October last year, appeals to a specific group of students who may not feel entirely confident in approaching university studies.

“Getting into university is just the beginning of a demanding academic journey, and many students are ill-prepared for the challenges of university study when they get there – that’s why quite a few students don’t finish their degree,”

Mr Cranshaw goes on to say. “In the Taylors UniLink program we have developed specific subjects to explicitly and systematically address the skills needed to succeed. Graduates of Taylors UniLink will be confident and ready to meet the challenges of undergraduate study.”

Outstanding student results have been achieved

Taylors College students have an enviable record of outstanding results. “Throughout Taylors College we have provided academically rigorous preparation for many years to many students, who have gone on to excel at many Australian universities,” says Cranshaw.

“All Australian universities know Taylors College. In most cases, successful graduates of Taylors UniLink will be able to enrol into second year at university, since after the completion of the unilink year Taylors UniLink courses are first-year university courses.”

Mr Cranshaw says the Taylors UniLink Diploma not only prepares students academically for the university course they want, but also addresses other needs, particularly those of international students. Many overseas students arrive in Australia with limited knowledge of our society and may need to improve their English, he says.

Students are very well supported

“Taylors UniLink Diplomas help students adapt to studying and living in Australia. Parents can be confident we have excellent support networks for students to meet their social, pastoral and academic need. “Taylors UniLink offers a personal approach to learning that is just not available at large universities. We can take them from being somewhat uncertain students arriving in Melbourne to being ready to take responsibility for their own educational journey,” he said. “Our students and academic staff get to know each other, which is the key to student success in higher education.”

Studying at Taylors Isn't Just About Burying Your Head in a Book

The three-semester course has been designed to ensure students receive appropriate support and individual attention in the first stage of their higher education. Campus Director, Tony Cranshaw, says that the academic progress of students is carefully monitored.

“Students receive a progress report at the end of each trimester to ensure they are on track to achieving their academic goals,” he says. Student welfare is the top priority, with psychologists and welfare counsellors, nurses and first-aid officers on campus. The college provides a 24-hour emergency telephone number.

“Support for our students begins before they arrive at our campuses – even before they leave home,” Mr Cranshaw said. “They receive essential, reassuring information about their course and accommodation – if it’s needed – so that they are well prepared for life in Melbourne and confident about studying.”

Orientation then provides information about their course, and students can meet their teachers and lecturers.Mr Cranshaw says that Taylors UniLink works to ensure students enjoy a balance between study and leisure.

“Our sports and special interest and hobby clubs and societies are a great way to meet new people,” he says. “Research shows that students who work with their friends in informal study groups are more likely to succeed in their studies.”
